LED Modules – Control & Power

LED Modules
3 Feb 2026
Like many aspects of the lighting landscape, adding control features, such as dimming, can improve power efficiency and extend the lifespan of LED modules in signage applications.

By adopting control features for your LED signage installation, you can save money and time on maintenance and module replacements. This can apply to large signage installations, such as cranes and skyscraper branding and signage, as well as indoor signage in shopping centres.

LED Modules: Determining the right power supply

Determining whether your application requires constant-voltage or constant-current LED modules is usually the first step. For flexibility in scaling and ease of use, such as in a retail installation, constant-voltage LED modules might be best suited. In contrast, for installations that require little to no modifications or updates, constant-current-powered LED modules might be best suited.

LED Modules – What’s the right voltage?

Selecting the LED module's voltage type depends on the type of installation for your upcoming project. Our range can be separated into two voltage groups: 12V and 24V.

For smaller installations, perhaps smaller channel lettering for indoor use, or even LED signage on vehicles with much shorter runs, 12V may be the better-suited option. The reason is that 12V LED modules can experience resistance over longer runs. This can lead to noticeably dimmer LED modules at the end of the run, thereby impacting the sign's aesthetic and functionality.

In larger installations with longer runs, such as commercial signage and large channel letters, 24V LED modules have fast become the industry standard. With a 24V power supply, signage installers can install twice as many LED modules before voltage drop affects an LED sign.

LED Control & Dimming – PWM Dimming

At Power Supplies Australia, we stock both constant-voltage and constant-current LED modules, with most featuring dimming via Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). PWM varies the duty cycle of the output, effectively turning the power on and off at extremely high speeds, so fast it’s imperceptible to the human eye. By changing the frequency of this output, it appears as dimming to humans.
If you’d like to learn more about this, read our blog on selecting the Best LED driver for dimming LED strips here.

For LED signage makers and lighting designers looking for a high-quality, reliable power supply, consider the MEAN WELL PWM series or the Power Source PDV series.

LED Module Control Systems – Casambi Wireless Mesh.

Typically, in commercial applications, integration to provide remote control of LED module settings requires an intermediary control. For us at Power Supplies Australia, the Power Source Casambi LED drivers enable users to interact directly with their lighting system from their mobile phones. The Casambi control mesh has been fast adopted around the world, providing excellent control over brightness, timing, and colour for commercial and retail installations.
